Early life and Education

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. who is popularly known as Shatta Wale was born in Accra police hospital in Ghana on 17th October 1984. He was born by Elsie Evelyn Avemegah (mother) and Charles Nii Armah Mensah Senior (father), a politician, legal practitioner, and businessman.

The popular dancehall king grows up with his family in Labiokorshie, Dansoman. His father later got separated from his mother which caused him to experience no motherly care. He attended Seven great princes academy in Dansoman Suburban in Accra. After which he attended Winneba secondary school and later to Volta Region of Ghana high school where he pursued his musical dreams.

Shatta Wale grows up with his father who unknowingly introduced him to Jamaican reggae music and culture. Thus, he started developing an interest in music at a tender age. His interest in music will later cause a rift between his father who wants him to become a lawyer at all cost.  This result in him sleeping in different slums and ghetto before his rise to fame.

Career

As said earlier, Shatta Wale started developing an interest in music after being introduced to reggae records by his father.

During his high school days, he learned how to play keyboard and vocal training from the music class at Winneba Secondary School. Later, he released ‘Moko Hoo’ under the stage name ‘Bandana’ with another Ghanaian musician in 2004. After which he released other hit songs like “No Problem” and “Oba Yaa” which makes his fanbase continue to grow.

After disappearing for years, Shatta Wale changes his stage name from ‘Bandana’ to ‘Shatta Wale’ in 2019. Also, he was able to rose to fame back after performing different stage performances and dropping many songs.

Most of his audiences at that time were youth living in ghettos and Nima, a small community in Accra dominated by Muslims. Some of the songs he produced at that time include ‘Anastasia’, ‘My Eyes Pon Di Money’, ‘Telephone No’, Havana’, ‘Shatta City’, ‘Enter the Net’, ‘Everybody Likes My Tin’, ‘Dancehall King’ and so on.

Some of these songs like ‘Shatta City’, ‘Havana’ and ‘Dancehall King’ make his fame rose like fire and gives him a lot of awards. Furthermore, he collaborated with Davido in 2015 to release ‘Wine Ya Waist’ song.

In 2016, Shatta Wale two hit songs ‘Mahama Paper’ and ‘Kakai’ was used as a political weapon during the year elections in Ghana. It was fronted to be a movement for NDC by Shatta Wale. Although he denied such and threatened to take anyone using his songs for such to a court.

Also, the Ghanaian rich musician has collaborated with a lot of local and international artists. Some of them include Beyonce, Davido, Skillibeng, D-Black Burna Boy, Sarkodie, Gappy Ranks, Amerado, Kweku Flick, and many others.

Apart from being a dancehall king and a musician, Shatta Wale was also an actor. He started acting at a little age in primary school when he was featured in By the Fireside, a popular drama series at the National Theatre of Ghana.
