Most celebrities have the life you can only dream of living; exotic cars, mansions and a fat bank account … these guys live a good life. But, at the end of the day, they have a human side that is not infallible and, as such, some celebrities are prone to some point in their life / career, they commit some kind of criminal offense.
Below is a list of the five Nigerian celebrities who have served time in prison for the crimes they have committed.
1. Sinzu (Sauce Kid)
Babalola Falemi, popularly known as Sauce Kid or Sinzu, was one of the biggest and most promising rappers in early 2010.
His career was one that critics and fans followed with interest because of the style of his sounds. Each song he performed and released at its peak was a monstrous success.
In 2016, social media was filtered with the essence that the rapper SMG had been arrested for theft and other related offenses.
The rapper was then accused of stealing bank credit card numbers and identifying information about their owners. He reportedly stole $ 15,388 from innocent victims.
In 2018, the rapper got released from prison and signed a contract with Davido’s record label DMW.
2. Ibinabo Fiberesima
For many people who don’t know, Ibinabo Fiberesima was a beauty contest queen. She won several beauty contests before participating in Miss Nigeria in 1991, where she emerged as the first runner-up. She became a very popular movie star.
However, Fiberesima’s career in Nollywood reached a lower level in 2006, when she was arrested for accidentally killing a doctor, Giwa Suraj. The actress was accused of manslaughter and reckless driving.
In 2016, she was sentenced to five years in prison by a Supreme Court in Lagos. However, she received a bail of N2 million and two bail of the same amount in the same year by a Court of Appeal in Lagos pending the determination of her appeal in the Supreme Court.
3. Dammy Krane
Dammy Krane was one of the promising musicians in Nigeria few years ago. After signing with the music icon, 2Face Idibia’s Hypertek Records, it was assumed that a new star was born. That was not the case, as the singer was always getting into trouble and the media was full of it.
The last straw which broke the camel’s back for the bigger-than-life character of Dammy Krane was in 2017, when Tapjets, an American jet company, accused the singer of using five different credit cards that didn’t belong to him when trying to book one private jet with them.
He was arrested and sent to prison for theft and fraud. He was released from prison in Miami after fulfilling his bail conditions, set at $ 7,500, after pleading not guilty to the charges and demanding a jury trial.
4. Naira Marley
Naria Marley, whose real name is Azeez Fashola, was a relatively unknown act until his arrest, released by the EFCC, on alleged fraud charges.
His accusation for a long time will be the most televised and commented on in Nigerian pop culture tales. The court premises were full of security details and fans who wanted to catch a glimpse of the singer. He was arrested, put in prison custody and then released after appearing in court a second time.
5. Uche Odoputa
In the late 90s and early 2000s, Uche Odoputa was one of the greatest actors in Nollywood. He was a regular face in many critically acclaimed films. For many, he would be one of those actors who would evolve with the industry over time.
It was not long before it appeared that Odoputa was not missing. He was no longer seen in film productions. Many thought he was taking a break or getting involved behind the scenes. But that was not the case, as the movie star was cooling down in prison.
Odoputa was arrested with cocaine at Lagos international airport in 2007. He was then sentenced to eight months in prison. However, he is back and better.
