COVID-19: If We Are Not Careful, Hunger Will Kill People, Obaseki’s Wife Warns

The wife of Edo State Governor Betsy Obaseki has warned that the diversion of relief materials for the most vulnerable in society will further increase the current difficulties faced by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to her, hunger can be an even bigger threat to life than the virus.

Obaseki said this when delivering some state government aid materials to representatives of various groups in the city of Benin, the state capital.

She asked them to resist any temptation to be greedy and keep the items for personal use or even hand them over to those who can afford it.

“These help materials are aimed only at the vulnerable in society, not at those who can afford the total lockdown in their homes. If we are careful, the coronavirus will not kill many people in this country, but if we are not careful, hunger will kill people. That is why the government is taking these steps to do what it has to do, ”she said.

The items distributed include bags of rice, beans, garri, pasta, oil, puree, corn, spices, soaps and detergents.

According to the state commissioner for Social Development and Gender, Maria Edekor, the beneficiaries of the aid packages are the elderly, returnees, people with disabilities, prisoners, children in correctional centers, rehabilitation centers and orphanages.

Meanwhile, the governor’s wife urged residents who are prosperous to imitate the government’s gesture and also help the vulnerable around them.
