Armed bandits who terrorize the Birnin-Gwari area in Kaduna state have kidnapped three candidates after writing their Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Kaduna in 2020.
The bandits, in the attack that took place on the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road on Saturday, also killed an Ibrahim Idris, the driver of a former House of Representatives member, Adamu Shekarau.
The Kaduna State Police Command, when confirming the incident to 9jatoday on Monday, said that a one-and-a-half-year-old child was also abducted alongside the UTME candidate.
The command’s PPRO, ASP Muhammad Jalige, however, said the police were following the bandits when an armored personnel carrier (APC) was dispatched to the area.
He also gave names of the kidnapped candidates to UTME such as: Yusuf Sani, Ummi Sani and Umairah Mustapha.
He said: “Yes, there was an attack on Saturday on the Birnin-Gwari road. The driver of the vehicle was shot dead and four other people were kidnapped.
“The incident happened around a village called Ungwan Yako.
“Three of the kidnapped victims are candidates who came to Kaduna to take the UTME exam. They were returning when the incident happened. They are; Yusuf Sani, Ummi Sani and Umairah Mustapha. The fourth person is a one and a half year old baby.
“The police in the area involved the criminals and recovered their motorcycle. We are still on the trail of criminals.
“In addition, the commissioner requested further developments on the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road and an armored personnel carrier (APC) was deployed to occupy this area particularly. APC is about to leave the police headquarters now at the scene. “
