Boko Haram confronts Buratai with mortar gun attacks in Borno camp

Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday night launched an attack on the Army Special Super Camp in Ngamdu, a border town between Borno and Yobe, where Army Chief of Staff, General Tukur Buratai, moved to launch an attack end to terrorists.

The bold attack by the insurgents comes almost 72 hours after Buratai sent a condemnatory message to defeat the insurgents in a very short space.

9jatoday reports that the Army Chief of Staff, at the special celebration of Easter 2020 with troops in the Camp, promised to stay with them until the insurgents are “substantially degraded”.

But insurgents tested their confidence by launching the attack on the field, while Buratai and his officers apparently devise strategies on how to deliver the final blows to terrorists.

Camp sources, who are not authorized to speak to the press, revealed that the insurgents arrived in trucks with firearms from the southwest side and opened fire.

Other sources revealed that mortar weapons were dropped in the field, but no fatalities were recorded.

Some of the troops reportedly suffered minor injuries.

Our correspondent concluded that Buratai ordered the troops to pursue the insurgents and warned them to focus on a larger target.

“The army chief of staff told the soldiers to see what happened as a distraction from the main operation they are going to carry out. But we defended ourselves very well by repelling them,” said the source.

Another source revealed that insurgents could have been irritated by a previous operation that troops carried out on Tuesday.

“We suspect that it was the advanced operation we did yesterday that made them angry and they decided to come and attack us.

“They know that we killed some of their men in the operation and captured others alive, so they were angry,” he said.

The acting director of the Army Public Relations, Colonel Sagir Musa, was unable to respond to messages sent to him.
