Lagos State Government has just confirmed a third case of the deadly new coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.
Akin Abayomi, the state health commissioner, disclosed this at a press conference on Tuesday.
We have a 30-year-old lady who came back on March 13th. She returned from the UK after a 10 day stay. After the isolation period, she became ill and had a dry cough,” he said.
” We went to collect her sample and tested this sample and this sample was positive. Yesterday, we now had a third case in Lagos and, as I know, in Nigeria. As I speak, the honorable minister of health is giving his briefing to the press.
She arrived on flight BA 75 on March 13th. Since last night, we started the isolation process. She was transferred from her home to an infectious center in Yaba. She is no longer a suspect; she is a confirmed case. We will contact all members of that flight. Let’s repeat what we did with the index case.
“Fortunately, she has been very obedient to our guidelines, so she hasn’t gone anywhere until we transferred her. She was transferred with the family, they were in the family suite, well separated from her. This is an additional measure, because in Lagos we are trying to be very aggressive with tracking contacts, because we don’t want the case to be transmitted. She’s doing well, she doesn’t need any active intervention, but care.”
This development comes few days after the Lagos state government confirmed that the second case was now free of the virus and should be discharged soon.
The new case is said to be independent of Nigeria’s index – the Italian who traveled from Milan to Lagos in February.
This also raises the total number of cases of the disease in the country to three.
Twenty-seven African countries registered cases of COVID-19, the last being Benin, Liberia, Somalia and Tanzania.
