According to the Lagos State Yaba Mainland Hospital, the health of the first Coronavirus patient being managed and is improving.
Lagos Health Commissioner Professor Akin Abayomi disclosed this on Saturday at a news conference in which he updated the way the patient was being treated.
He, however, said that the state government has not yet put the number of contacts that have been identified so far because the numbers were still being compared.
Professor Abayomi urged residents not to panic and assured that the government was taking the necessary steps to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
He gave the updates before a meeting of health workers involved in managing health emergencies in Nigeria.
The meeting is expected to take place at the Emergency Operations Center located inside China’s Hospital, Yaba.
At the meeting, representatives of the federal and state governments, including officials from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), would develop strategies to contain the spread of the first confirmed case of coronavirus in the country.
Professor Abayomi spoke to reporters just two days after the state government confirmed the first case of the new coronavirus in Lagos Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the commissioner revealed that the case was confirmed on Thursday and reported to the Federal Ministry of Health.
The case involved an Italian citizen who traveled to Nigeria on Tuesday from Milan, Italy, for a brief business visit.
He reportedly fell ill the next day and reported to a hospital in Ogun state, where he tested negative for malaria.
After studying the nature of his illness, staff at the medical facility referred the patient to the Lagos state biosafety facility for isolation and testing.
He was confirmed as infected with coronavirus by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos SAtate Teaching Hospital, part of the NCDC laboratory network.
