Court sentences man to death by hanging for armed robbery

A high court in Ado-Ekiti, capital of Ekiti state, on Monday sentenced a 21-year-old man, Isa Abdulkareem, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Abdulkareem was indicted on January 8, 2018 on two counts of conspiracy and armed robbery.

In her trial, Judge Oluwatoyin Abodunde maintained that the prosecutor managed to prove that the alleged armed robbery had taken place.

Judge Abodunde added that the prosecuting attorney was able to “prove all elements of the assault with real evidence that has evidential values”.

The judge further added: “I found the defendant guilty and convicted accordingly.

“He is sentenced to death by hanging and also may the Lord have mercy on his soul.”

Mr. Gbemiga Adaramola the prosecutor, said that the assault operation took place in Oke-Ureje, along the Igirigiri road, Ado Ekiti.

He said the crime violated Section 402 (2) of the Criminal Code Cap C16, Laws of the State of Ekiti in Nigeria.

Gbemiga Adaramola said the convict was arrested by community members during a combined surveillance patrol exercise before being handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution.

The convict, during the armed robbery on December 19 and 23, 2016, respectively, when he stole an Adeya Olalekan of an amount of N74,000, Infinix Note 2 phone, among others.

He also stole from Olomola Taiwo a sum of N110,000 and 2 Techno Y6 phones.

During interrogation, the convict confessed to the crime and took security agents to the hideout, where they found and kept weapons and ammunition.

The prosecutor called four witnesses while the recovered exposures, including his confessional statements to the police, were presented in court.

The defendant was brought into evidence by his lawyer, Mr. Adeyinka Opaleke, and did not call a witness.

The recovered exposures include; 4 Danish weapons and toy guns, locally manufactured pistols, 4 Nokia phones, 4 Techno phones, masks, knives, amulets, axes, victims’ helmets to wrap money, cartridges, used cartridges, knives, pellets, N10,000 cash, among others.
