Customs Seizes 1,393 Bags of Rice Hidden in Gas Cylinders

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has discovered a new strategy that is being implemented by smugglers.

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Ikeja, said Wednesday that it intercepted 1,393 bags of rice hidden in gas cylinders in Ogun State between February 5 and 17, 2020.

625 boxes of frozen chicken, 187 bottles and 66 drums of vegetable oil were also seized, among many other items in the period under analysis.

FOU’s Zone A interim controller Usman Yahaya, who made the disclosure, attributed the discovery to his men’s tireless efforts, saying it continues to produce more results in his actions against smuggling.

“Just two weeks after the visit of the Customs Controller General to Lagos, where he presented several seizures made by FOU worth more than 10 billion N10, we again intercepted 1,393 bags of smoked foreign smoked rice, 187 jerrycans / 66 drums of foreign vegetable oil and 625 boxes of poultry products from unapproved routes in Ogun State between February 5 and 17, 2020, based on routine surveillance and patrol, ”said Yahaya.

The items, transported in 12 different vehicles and also hidden in gas cylinders, have an accumulated value of tax paid (DPV) of N40.14 million.

“This desperate act by these smugglers of daring demons who hide edible items in a gas cylinder further justifies the persecution of customs agents. The DPV for each type of seized items includes rice, N27.86 million; vegetable oil, N6.28 million, and frozen birds N6 million, “said region spokesman Jerry Attah.

Yahaya, a deputy customs controller, warned smugglers to either regret their unscrupulous activities or continue to count their losses as their unit would remain a nightmare source for economic saboteurs.

He also advised legitimate traders to be compatible with his statements, as the unit is always ready to facilitate its trade in accordance with the best global practices.

He urged all significant Nigerians to support the service’s fight against smuggling activities, providing information that could help the unit obtain more monumental seizures.
