The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has just presented the Certificate of return to Senator Douye Diri.
Diri’s deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, also received his return certificate.
The electoral commission at a briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja declared the winner of the Democratic Peoples Party (PDP) of the election of the governor of Bayelsa on 16 November.
INEC President Mahmood Yakubu told reporters that Diri was declared a winner after top officials met on Friday morning to review the election results, without the APC votes being overturned by the court.
“The total number of votes cast after excluding those from APC is now 146,999. The PDP interviewed 143,172 and obtained 25%, as required by law, ”said Yakubu during the briefing.
Diri’s victory follows the Supreme Court verdict that sacked David Lyon and his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo.
Judge Ejembi Ekwo, who read the trial on Thursday, made the orders after disqualifying APC vice-governor candidate Degi-Eremienyo as a candidate in the election for submitting counterfeit certificates to INEC.
The court ruled that Degi-Eremienyo’s disqualification had infected the joint ticket with which he and the government candidate, Lyon, competed and won on 16 November 2019.
A five-man panel of the main court led by Judge Mary Peter-Odili ordered INEC to withdraw the Return Certificate issued to the APC candidate.
