The governor of Anambra, Willie Obiano, has ordered the total lockdown of the state, which registered its index case of COVID-19 on Friday.

He instructed security officers to arrest violators of the new order when necessary.

The governor gave the guidelines on Saturday, during a broadcast to the state about the new development.

According to him: “Ndi Anambra, I regret to announce that, despite our proactive measures to isolate our beloved state from this pandemic, we registered the first case of coronavirus in the state on Friday.

The index case came from Lagos. He was placed in one of our Protection Care Centers.

“At the same time, we started aggressive contact tracking to ensure that everyone he came into contact with is brought to the network for professional treatment that will save lives.”

He added: “Ndi Anambra, I ask that you do not panic because of this. It didn’t take us by surprise. We are adequately prepared to deal with the situation ”

“We have trained enough manpower to handle Covid-19 cases and our Protection Care Centers are among the best in the country at the moment”

Obiano also announced new measures to be taken to contain the spread of the virus.

Such measures, he said, included restrictions on movement that were extended for two weeks.

He said: “This time, we are placing a comprehensive block in Anambra. We will not tolerate any movement across the state by individuals and groups ”

“Only people in essential services are allowed to move in delivering these services to people”

“Ndi Anambra is advised to stay indoors to avoid contamination by this virus.

“This time, the security agencies will enforce the movement restriction and have my authorization to make arrests whenever necessary to keep our beloved state safe”

“All borders with neighboring states remain closed. There will be no vehicular or human traffic across the borders of the state of Anambra. “
