LASG Commences Enforcement on Illegal Slaughter Slabs

The Lagos State Government(LASG) has commenced the enforcement exercise on illegal slaughter slabs. Following the commencement of this exercise, an illegal slaughter slab in the Okerube area of Alimosho Local Government has been dismantled, 10 butchers arrested and two live cows confiscated by the LASG.

The exercise which was carried out by men of the re-inaugurated Monitoring, Enforcement, and Compliance (MEC) Team of the State Ministry of Agriculture is in furtherance of the sanitization of the red meat value chain.

According to the Acting Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos state, Abisola Olusanya, the exercise is happening after repeated warnings to the operators of these illegal slaughter slab.

“This dislodgement exercise is necessary, especially as the State is particular about the production of wholesome and healthy meat for its residents while simultaneously ensuring that the streets are free of stray animals”.

She noted that the MEC was re-inaugurated last week by the LASG and was charged with the responsibilities of not only removing illegal abbattoir but also controlling and enforcing issues bordering around the transportation and sale of meat.

She says that the illegal abattoirs were constituting a risk to the legal operators who are doing well to ensure that only healthy and wholesome meat is produced for consumption.

Olusanya added that the MEC Team would also monitor the standards of operations of all the approved slaughterhouses in order to ensure compliance with professional best practices.
