At least a person was killed and others injured in the violence that occurred on Friday after the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) convention, held in the local government area of Sagbama, Bayelsa state.
It was learned that the unidentified young man was murdered at the convention site, which was organized to form an electoral committee for the next IYC world elections.
Sources said the crisis erupted during the convention after some young people opposed members of the electoral committee chaired by a lawyer, Bekewei Ajuwa.
Confirming the incident, the IYC President, Zona Central, described him as unhappy and blamed him for the cultists’ activities.
He said the convention was already ending when some young people started a violent protest against members of the electoral committee.
He condemned the incident and warned some interested parties against including cultism in IYC activities.
He said: “In addition to the murder, caused by the activities of some cultists, the convention was concluded and the eleco was also constituted.
“Some people felt that they were not comfortable with the members of the eleco and, instead of being civil in their complaints, they were violent.
“At IYC, we repeatedly warned against turning our activities into a theater of war. We also warn interested parties against including cultism in our activities. “
