According to data provided by the International Monetary Fund this year 2021, Burundi is the poorest country in Africa with a GDP per capita of just $267 per year.
Mind you, Burundi is not the only African country with devastating numbers; up to 22 African countries have a GDP per capita of less than a thousand dollars.
