A 45 year old jinx has been broken at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) where a woman, Professor Florence Obi emerged as the first female Vice-Chancellor-elect of the institution.
The Chairman of the University Governing Council and the Pro-Chancellor, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu made the announcement on Friday that Prof. Obi emerged top over twelve others who participated in the screening exercise.
The newly elected VC would be taking over from Prof. Zana Akpagu, whose tenure ends on November 30, 2020.
Senator Nwaogu who congratulated Prof Obi for emerging forst female Vice Chancellor described her as “an astute educational icon”. Nwaogu also descibed her emergence as a victory for women.
On the other hand, Prof Obi promised to run an inclusive administration, she says “I’m happy and return all the glory to God. I have just received my appointment letter from the 12th Council as Vice Chancellor-elect. The process was free and fair, and I promise to run an inclusive administration.”
Prof. Obi was a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, and former Commissioner for Women Affairs in Cross River State.
