Early Life and Background

Sunday Ogochukwu Oliseh was born on the 14th of September, 1974 in a small town called Abavo in Delta state. His father is an accountant while his mother is a businesswoman.

Even though Oliseh hails from Delta, he was raised in Lagos in Festac Town where he always followed his age mates to play football after school in St. Mary’s Catholic Church Field in Orege. Oliseh started playing football since when he was a kid even though his father frowns against it and wanted him to pursue something in education.

Oliseh had 3 brothers and a Sister;

  • An elder brother who is a lawyer and one of the richest players agent in Nigeria. Churchill is the owner of Abiede FC
  • Azubuike and Egwatu are his two younger brothers who are currently Nigerian professional football players.
  • A sister; Tessy who is married, a fashion designer, and the owner of Tesslo Concepts.

Sunday Oliseh Educational Background

Sunday Oliseh attended his primary education at Ojota’s Bright Star Primary School in Lagos. He also attended both Ajao estate high school and Methodist boys high schools for his secondary education. During this time, he is always found playing football during the school break.

He later went to the Lagos State University(LASU) for his Tertiary education. During his course of education in the Physical and Health Education Department, he represented the school team in the NUGA games in 1991.

Even though Sunday Oliseh started playing football when he was a kid, he started his football career when he was signed to Julius Berger FC. While in School, Sunday Oliseh got signed as a player under Coach Joe Erico in Julius Berger FC.

It was while he was still in the Julius team when he was invited by a Belgium agent; Mr. Claude Bissot who take him to Belgium for trials. This was the beginning of grace for Oliseh. He later gets signed and since then he has played in over 63 matches Internationally.

He later learned to speak French, German, Italian, and Dutch while in Belgium to aid his conversation. He has played with top teams including Juventus FC, Dortmund, and even AFC Ajax.

Sunday Oliseh participated in FIFA World Cup both in 1994, and 1998. He also participated in the Olympic gold medal and won in 1996. In 1998, the Confederation of African Football(CAF) voted Oliseh as the 3rd Best Football Player in Africa.

In 2004, Oliseh was sacked from the Dortmund team after he headbutted a teammate; Vahid Hashemi over alleged racial remarks. At the age of 31, he retired officially from Football and started his Coaching Career.

Oliseh started his Coaching Career with an Under 19 Belgium team in the 3rd Division. He was later promoted to first-team chief coach during the 2008 to 2009 season and later to Chief Coach in the 2014-2015 season

In 2015, the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) got assigned as the chief coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria. During his tenure as the coach of the National Team, he managed 14 game matches where his team lost twice, making 19 goals with 6 Conceded. If this isn’t a great result, I don’t know what it is.

Oliseh is a talented coach who leads his team to qualify Group Phase of the 2018 World, CHAN Tournament in Rwanda, and makes a draw against Tanzania in the AFCON qualifier.

Sunday Oliseh later resigned on the 26th of February in 2016 from managing Super Eagles of Nigeria. He resigned on the bases of contract violation, lack of support, unpaid wages, and benefits to him, his assistant, and even the players. That’s 8 months after he was assigned.

Sunday Oliseh was also appointed as the new manager of Fortuna Sittard on the 27th of December, 2016. He was later fired in February 2018, which he claimed was because he refused to partake in some illegal activities in the club.
