Violence broke out in Olomore Abeokuta market on Thursday morning, when dozens of Hausa traders riot and protested the death of one of them during an alleged shooting by agents of the SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad).
The angry traders who are native of Hausa that sells onion, pepper, tomato, yam and fruit were reportedly violent, crushing objects, including the operating vehicle of the Ogun State-owned television station and many other properties in sight.
SARS agents were said to have chased some suspected criminals towards the Olomore market and fired them when they found their way into the midst of the traders, provoking angry reactions.
Traders in the Olomore market soon joined those in the market near Lafenwa, who learned of the shooting and entered the Lafenwa – Abeokuta – Lagos expressway, interrupting the flow of traffic.
They marched towards Olomore with bonfires set at various locations on the always-busy road.
Many fled in different directions, looking for where to hide from the damage.
Commercial activities came to an abrupt end.
The Ogun state police public relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, when contacted, said he would respond to the traders riot incident soon.
