Family Background and Education
Samuel Loraer Ortom was born on the 23rd of April in 1961 in Guma local government area in Benue state. He attended St. John’s Primary School starting in 1970. Until 1974, when he transferred to St. Catherine Primary School in Makurdi where he completed his primary school.
He proceeds to attend Idah secondary commercial college in Kogi state for his secondary school education. During his stay at the school, his father retired which brought a financial crisis to the family. He had to drop schooling for driving. It was through driving buses that he was able to complete his education.
Samuel Ortom starts financing himself by obtaining the General Certificate of Education (GCE). After, he also obtains the Manchester National Institute of Salesmanship Diploma.
After obtaining all these, the hardworking governor didn’t relent. He also pursues an Interim Joint Matriculation Board Certificate from Ahmadu Bello University in 1995. The same applied to his Journalism Diploma that was gotten from the same university in 1998.
In 2001, he also got certified with Advanced Diploma in Personnel Management from Benue University. From the same university, he bagged a Master’s degree in Public Administration in 2004.
Governor Samuel Ortom is currently a doctorate holder from the prestigious Belize Commonwealth University via distance learning.
Samuel Ortom Career
The Incumbent governor started his career by working as a Gyado foods company salesman. After which he climbed up the ladder to the position of sales manager.
Since then, he has served and held different public offices. He once holds the position of the National President of the Independent Print-media Publishers Association of Nigeria. He was also part of the Governing Council of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON).
Governor Samuel Ortom ventured into politics in 1991 when he competed for the Guma Local Government Chairman position. He won the election under the SDP party. He was appointed and served the entire Guma LGA till 1993.
After completing his tenure, he was appointed to other positions. This is including the minister of State Industry, trade, and investment under President Goodluck Jonathan’s era in July 2011. He served till October 2014 before he resigned to compete for the Benue State Governorship position.
Sadly, he couldn’t pick a party ticket for his new party (People Democratic Party, PDP) which he decamped to. He had to cross to another party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) in April 2015 under which he won and got elected.
On the 20th of May, 2019, Samuel was re-elected and he’s currently Benue’s state governor.
Apart from being a politician, Samuel Ortom is a businessman and proprietor of many businesses. This is including Achieve Engineering Limited, Capital Prints Limited, Oracle Business Limited, Oracle Printing Press, Oracle Oil Mills, and Oracle Farms Limited.
He also owns a foundation called Oracle Business Limited Foundation which funds the treatment of snake bites and other stings from dangerous animals.
