UEFA Chief: Season Will Be ‘Lost’ If Coronavirus Pandemic Extends Beyond June

The UEFA said that the European football leagues are still looking at all options and do not rule out ending this season – if the coronavirus pandemic subsides.

“We could start again in mid-May, June or even late June,” Aleksander Ceferin told the Italian La Repubblica daily.

Anytime after that and “the season is likely to be lost,” he said.

The prospect of the entire season simply being canceled causes fans of clubs like Liverpool to panic – on the verge of winning their first title in 30 years.

Ceferin did not say when UEFA would issue a final decision and emphasized that consultations with major leagues and clubs were still underway.

“There is also a proposal to end this season at the beginning of the next and then start the next one a little later,” said Ceferin.

The Slovenian added that he personally opposed the idea of making big matches behind closed doors.

Belarus remains the only European nation that still plays football in the face of a pandemic that has officially killed some 28,000 lives worldwide.

Italy suspended its Serie A season on March 9.

Its world leading number of the new coronavirus is officially 9,134.
