A team of security agents raided the palace of the Emir of Kano on Monday following the dethronement of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The security team at the palace of the traditional ruler included men from the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).
The removal of Sanusi was announced by the Secretary of State Government, Usman Alhaji, during a meeting comprising of the State Executive Council, which was held at the Government House in Kano.
According to Usman Alhaji, the decision to remove the traditional ruler was the result of his alleged consistent refusal to comply with the instructions given by the state government.
Elsewhere, there were reports of a turbulent session at the Kano State Assembly shortly after the announcement of the removal of the emir.
In a social media trends video, Monday’s plenary session was when a group of lawmakers in the chamber came together in what appeared to be a mace fight in the House’s legislative chamber.
The mace was later removed from the chamber by a man who was believed to be the clerk of the House.
Sanusi’s removal comes a week after the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission convened the Emir.
He was asked to respond to a petition accusing him of selling N2 billion worth of land belonging to the Kano Emirate.
The traditional ruler, however, secured a court restraining order to prevent the commission from investigating him.
