Sexual Intercourse And Menstruation – What You Need To Know

Having sxual intercourse during your Menstruation is very safe. The popular myth that it is dangerous originates strictly from religious beliefs. Many people believed that women were “dirty” or “unclean” while menstruating, and for that reason, contact with menstruating women was limited and mostly seen as an abomination. In fact,  up to date some religions still adhere to these practices. Medically speaking, there is nothing that stops or discourages sx during  your period, this is because :

  1. Doctors prescribe it

When asked about it, a doctor said: “If the patient is totally comfortable with it, then it’s great to continue to enjoy sx throughout the month and not take a break because of menstruation, it is perfectly natural and safe for both ”.

In other to avoid stained bedsheets, you can be creative and put a towel down on the bed, or just be spontaneous and get busy while in the shower. Do not be concerned if you see dark red or brown clumps during or after sx; these clumps are usually just older blood and cells of your uterine lining, and it is a perfectly normal thing.

  1. You are most likely to enjoy it and your partner might enjoy it too

Arousal is different for each and every woman, and some may be too distracted by the menstrual pain of their period and its mood swings to actually get in the mood for sx, while others actually get aroused during menstruation. That is because your estrogen and testosterone are low on day 1, but they begin to rise by day 3. “Some women report they feel more aroused and more sensitive around this time” Also your period flow can serve as extra lubrication during sx, this can also increase the level of pleasure.

Women tend to assume that their partner will be disgusted by their period but it is often the person who is menstruating who puts a stop to sx, not her partner. People are different, while some people will be more open to sx during the period others may not. If you are not sure what your partner might think, ask at an appropriate time, good communication is everything in a relationship.

  1. Pick one or another

If you are not comfortable with penetration during your period, there is no reason you cannot still enjoy other sxual encounters without making a mess. “She can wear a tampon and the focus can be on the clitoris rather than actual penetration,”  says a doctor, and you can still help your partner orgasm with oral stimulation or blow job.

  1. You still need to protect yourself

Do not think for a second that you are entirely free of getting pregnant if you have sx while on your period. “Some periods may last more than a week and sometimes a woman’s ovulation can overlap with her menstruation,” a doctor explains; apart from that, sperm can survive for 3 to 5 days in the woman.

You might also need to use a condom if you don’t know your partner’s STD status. Do not be scared of having sxual intercourse during your menstruation, it might be more fun than you imagined.
