The agency was founded in October 1992 under Decree No. 15 of the 1993 constitution which was amended by Decree No. 19 of 1999 and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Act Cap N1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004.

NAFDAC collaborates with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to eradicate drug and substance abuse in Nigeria. They authorize the import, export, sale, and distribution of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances among other controlled substances.
The board advocates the importance of consuming quality and safe products which must have passed through the appropriate analysis. They own and maintain establishments and laboratories in sparse areas of Nigeria for the performance of most of their functions.
6. REGISTRATION OF FOOD AND DRUGS:
For any manufactured product to thrive and sell in Nigeria, it has to be registered and marked up with a seal from the NAFDAC. All packaged edible foods and drugs must have a Registered number under NAFDAC.
It is advised that before you consume any product, endeavor to check if it has a NAFDAC number. This is because some of the products lacking this number might be expired or not durable.
7. GOVERNMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
The National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control advises the Government, private sector, and other Regulatory bodies with regard to the quality, safety, and efficacy of providing regulated products.
They are the ones that issue instructions, guidelines, and grant approvals to food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, and household chemicals.
