The 10 Best Space Movies To Watch

What are the best space movies? I have always been fascinated by everything related to space and its exploration. So much so that I often watch documentaries on this topic. In cinema, in the science fiction genre, we have many films that unfold in space, whether with a fantasy or a more realistic approach. Being a fan of the theme of real space missions, I decided to put together a list of the 10 best realistic space films for those seeking to see it, even in the scope of fiction, to portray the dangers and wonders of space exploration.

The fact that it considers only space films realistic already eliminates many other films that, despite being set in space, have at their core something essentially fantastical, such as intelligent aliens, space monsters or intergalactic wars. This explains the absence of films like ‘ Star Wars ‘, ‘ Star Trek ‘ and ‘ Aliens ‘ from this list. The idea here is to list only films that seek to portray space exploration realistically and based on existing laws of physics.

Still, some of these films may, at some point, take a “poetic freedom” to try to imagine what it would be like that we still cannot predict or explain. This in itself does not disqualify a film, as long as it remains based on a reasonable and acceptable logic without violating any established concept. However, it is important to note that the quality of the film is also being evaluated, it is not a list of the ’10 most realistic space films’.

Anyway, for lovers of the theme, here is the tip of some films that transported us to space and moved us with remarkable events of space exploration or made us dream of a future where new adventures will be possible.

The 10 Best Space Movies To Watch

Below is the comprehensive list of the best space films to watch with their trailer attached to them you can have the best sci-fi experience.

10. Europa Report (2013)

I watched this movie well after its release and I was surprised by the quality of the production and the actors. Of course, we need to reveal the budget limitations, but we still have a good example of the genre, even considering the more “fanciful” and somewhat unnecessary ending, mind you, many people still asking to know if it is a true-life story.

9. 2010 – The Year We Will Make Contact (1984)

This film, which works as a sequel to the classic ‘ 2001 – A Space Odyssey ‘, despite having its merits, is nowhere near the original. Still, it helps us to understand the story of the first film a little better and has interesting effects and creative concepts, which makes it stand out and get a place on the list of best space movies.

8. Interstellar (2014)

I have no doubt that the choice to place Interstellar in this position will generate a lot of controversies, but the third extremely “scientific fantasy” act weighed heavily in my decision, so much so that I made a point of emphasizing that the only reason for its inclusion are the 2/3 initials of the movie. What started as a masterpiece of cinematography based on facts and logic, ended up going on a fantastical journey that tries to explain itself too much and that, in my view, ended up damaging the film a lot.

7. Moon (2009)

Although exploration is not the central focus of this film, the realism and quality of the representation of this theme is undeniable. The fact is that, in addition to having an excellent fiction film based on logical concepts, we also have a great drama that discusses deeper concepts about ethics and the value of human life.

6. Sunshine (2007)

I confess that this film had gone unnoticed by me and I only recently corrected this error. I was very happy for that because I had missed the chance to see a film with great effects, good actors and a very creative story about the death of the Sun and a mission that aims to relive it. Not to mention Danny Boyle‘s excellent direction. If you like the genre and haven’t seen this movie yet, you don’t know what you’re missing, it is one of the best space movies you should see.

5. The Right Stuff (1983)

The first years of the space race that culminated with the conquest of the moon were without a doubt the most heroic moments of human space exploration. This film shows exactly this period where pilots risked their lives for the technological advances that made space exploration possible today. If you want to know more about the space program “Mercury”, this is the perfect film.

4. Apollo 13 (1995)

This film tells the facts of one of the most incredible missions in space history where human knowledge and genius were tested to bring their astronauts to safety. With a stellar cast led by Tom Hanks and a first-rate production, it is without a doubt one of the great films of the genre.

3. Gravity (2013)

This is perhaps the best example of how a simple routine mission can turn into something extremely dangerous, Gravity is the third-best space movie. The film shows the contrast between the beauty of the immensity of space and the dangers of this harsh environment for the human race. The moments of contemplation are charged with emotion and artistic beauty worthy of a masterpiece. Sandra Bullock‘s magnificent interpretation is the icing on the cake that turns this film into one of the best films about space.

2. The Martian (2015)

Despite being the most recent on the list, this film has already arrived showing excellent quality and being considered by many as the most realistic film about space exploration. Matt Damon‘s interpretation is almost perfect and, despite his optimism and humor worthy of fiction, he manages to show us all the difficulties in survival in space in a way totally based on known facts and logic. No other movie will make you feel like you are on Mars like this.

1. 2001- A Space Odyssey (1968)

The number 1 best space movie on our list is “A Space Odyssey”. Some may argue about the very traveling ending, the enigmatic beginning or its duration, but no one can question the strength of this science fiction masterpiece and its revolutionary role in the genre.

Discounting the poetic licenses (which at least do not try to explain themselves, as in the case of Interstellar), the film is one of the most realistic movies ever made about space, either by the masterful representation of the immensity of the silence of space or by the technology presented (with flat screens and computer effects unimaginable for the time).

It is worth remembering that the film was released in 1968, even before man reached the moon or sent missions to other planets. It just reinforces the power of this film and the merit of Kubrick to present us with one of the most important films of the genre that remains impressive after all this time.

And you, what did you think of the list? Don’t forget to share your opinion and suggest other films!
